Meg O’Banyon made a mistake her senior year in high school. She got mixed up with football star Rowdy Rod Owens and after one night of foolish passion, Rod, on his way to serve Uncle Sam, left her with a gift. One she knew her father would never approve of. Fearing his drunken anger, Meg fled on a Greyhound Bus to try and make her way in the world with only twenty dollars in her pocket and a baby in her belly. The only contact she’s had with her family since the day she left is the occasional email she’d send her baby sister Mabe, just to let her know she was okay and still kicking. Meg has struggled for ten years to keep food on the table for her and her daughter, Emma, and up until now has done okay. A visit to the doctor is about to change her life forever.
When she gets the news of her father’s death, Meg uses this as an opportunity to secure a future for Emma in case things don’t turn out as she hopes, so she returns home to try and help Mabe save the family pub. As if dealing with her current burden is not enough, the sudden return of Rod Owens from Afghanistan sends Meg into a panic. She’s never told him about Emma.
Rod Owens was a jock with a passion for his country. Wanting to serve from the time he was old enough to carry a toy rifle, he dreamed of making a career of the army. He’d never wanted any ties to his home town and never dreamed he’d have his heart captured by the simple and plain Meg O’Banyon. Their one night of passion before Rod leaves to join the army sticks with him through eleven war torn years in the Middle East. After being injured and released from the only career he’s ever known, Rod returns home to more than one surprise. The woman who’s haunted his dreams for years suddenly confronts him with two heart wrenching secrets. Rod must now determine if he can overcome the hurt and betrayal and fight for what he loves most.
At eighteen, Mara O’Banyon packed a bag, got in her old Honda, and drove from Florida to New York determined to become a chef. For years she toiled in grungy kitchens of street diners, working her way through a very expensive culinary school. A school she’d never have been accepted to if it hadn’t been for the passion of Jacques Bernaut, who discovers her talent when he happens to enter the diner where she’s substituting for the owner behind the grill one day. Louis offers Mara not only a shot at her dreams, but a place in his bed as well. Mara rises quickly to stardom in Jacques restaurant even surpassing the skill of her mentor/lover.
When Mara learns of her father’s death she takes some time to return home and attend his funeral. Whlle there she learns of her sister’s struggle to keep the bar. An idea comes to her that might just help them breath new life into Shenanigans, if she can get past the stubbornness of one Jake O’Leary, the current cook/bar tender of Shenanigans. He thinks their food is fine and doesn’t need her fancy New York influence. Mara knows in her heart that her ideas for turning bar food into gourmet delights will draw people from far and wide to Shenanigans if Jake will only get out of her way.
Jake O’Leary has worked for Shane O’Banyon since he was released from the county jail. A self-trained chef he’s built the bars menu into what it is today and the last thing he needs is some fancy New York trained chef to boss him around in his own kitchen. However, it isn’t his kitchen and from what he’s learned if the sisters don’t come up with an idea, they will all be out on the streets. Mara’s ideas are as outrageous as his unreasonable attraction to her and he refuses to let his menu of solid and delicious bar food be switched up for a menu of food no one’s even heard of, much less can pronounce. When her haughty boyfriend shows up to try and bully her back to New York, Jake realizes Mara’s come to mean a great deal more to him than a culinary sparring partner. He has no idea if her ideas will work for the bar, but if it means keeping her around a little longer and out of the clutches of that French bully, he’s willing to try anything.
